Today is 30th anniversary of one of the most traumatic incidents in the life of my community as a young activist - the murder of 16 yr old Yusef Hawkins by a mob of white men who didn’t want black people in their hood. This forced me into my adult activism https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Yusef_Hawkins …pic.twitter.com/py5LXm0XNs

If you were a young black person in NY at that time you understood that there were “no go” zones for you and you knew that some would take up violence to keep you out. Yusef Hawkins was perhaps too young to get this. Or too innocent. Or too hopeful. His brutal murder laid it bare

Soon the world could see what we lived - this wasn’t a random act of violence. It was a barbarism that was deep seeded in community & the culture. So many of us started to shutdown the City to demand justice and to just be SEEN in our humanity by the law and fellow Americans

We tried to carry spirit of Yusef in our advocacy. We didn’t always succeed. Activists splintered. Communities frayed. Some exploited the moment. Others lost focus on justice. We learned how to deepen our commitment. Some attackers were jailed, but we didn’t approach true justice

I want to tell my 20 year old self that justice is a journey and that it’s worth the effort to take time to build real coalitions. I also want to tell that young activist that in order to be seen by the world one must first see and love yourself in all your halting complexity.

      Replying to @patrickgaspard

Yusuf Hawkins in Bensonhurst and Michael Griffith in Howard Beach were definitely part of defining the invisible geography of go and no-go zones in NYC in the 80s. That, and which areas real estate agents would or wouldn’t show a black homebuyers
