Seems to me that big journalistic errors or hoaxes have never had much effect on the publications that ran them. Stephen Glass, Jayson Blair, UVA gang rape, etc.

A lot of normal folks have always just assumed that newspapers and magazine routinely make shit up and have never conceived of the thought that media could be assumed to be reliable in the first place.

I look it at another way. The fact that people get caught, get exposed and get fired tells me that there are professional standards. I’d be way more suspicious of a publication that has never had an acknowledged episode plagiarism or fabrication
