Anti-depressants are probably overprescribed but taking unnecessary anti-depressants is usually not as bad as not taking them if they do help.
This all hangs on whether clinical depression is being over-diagnosed or not. I am sympathetic to the idea that “having a tough time “ is being mistaken for clinical depression. But no strong opinion

I don't think there is a right answer to that question. We're trying to apply a binary to what is a spectrum. (I mean, to some extent we have to, but it complicates things.)

Any spectrum become a binary once you draw a line. So I guess the question is whether contemporary psychology is drawing that line too far over on the spectrum.
