That doxxing is punitive and we should just be honest about it

Well then you and I disagree, both about doxxing and what celebrities should and should not be allowed to demand of the press that covers them. No dishonesty.

Then what’s the public interest in doxxing this guy?

Beats me. I have no idea what the story Buzzfeed is working on. Do you?

Not at all. Maybe there is a public interest. But your initial comment was basically, that he shouldn’t have any expectation not to be doxxed. I was more responding to that than to the Buzzfeed story that I know nothing about

1/He doesn’t. Look, no one asked him to try to be a celebrity. He made that decision in his own. And hey congrats, now he’s succeeded. And now he gets money and gets to go to the White House. Yay for him. Bit part of what comes with that is not the press is interested in him.

2/ And now he is deciding that he still wants the fame and the money, but he doesn’t want the press finding out anything about him he isn’t comfortable sharing. Which,!you know, wishes and fishes and all, but that’s not the way it works. Nor should it be.

Not disagreeing with any of that. Just pointing out that if doxxing serves no public interest purpose, then it becomes a form of discipline. You seem to agree with this. I’m just saying that we should be honest about it. I guess we will see which it is in this case

I’m not agreeing with you. It’s a completely separate issue but, as I have said many a time, I think everyone should be doxxed. I don’t think social media should allow any anonymous accounts.

1/ If you think that anonymous accounts shouldn’t be allowed, then doxxing is, by definition, a disciplinary action. That’s not necessarily bad. We should just stop pretending it’s something else.

2/ I’m somewhat ambivalent in anonymous accounts. But again we should be honest that the norm of full personal disclosure is also the norm that best enables the tech companies I monetize our online behavior
