The country didn’t support slavery. Even st the height of the civil war, the south had less population than the north and EVEN THEN most of the south was slaves. The villains were a minority among a minority.

Lots of non-slave owners supported slavery. More importantly, lots of Americans supported the white supremacy that kept even the poorest whites from occupying the lowest rung on the social hierarchy
