I don't find it weird or cringey for presidential contenders to address the audience in Spanish. In Canada, it's considered embarassing if a party leader *can't* converse in French. At the very least, bilingualism is a decent filtering mechanism.
The feeling appears to be that Beto’s Spanish was more a signal to white folks than an honest attempt to speak to Spanish-speaking voters. I have no opinion on whether that’s true
