This matches the observation that lots of people who want to live in cities really just want to live in suburbs closer to amenities
Yeah but maybe instead of being dismissive of that we should consider these values when designing urban neighbourhoods. Larger units, more amenity space in towers, multi-family located away from loud arterials, etc.
The only thing stopping people from building and living in bigger units is the cost. You can have whatever you can afford to have On the other hand, there are actual laws and regulations preventing people who want smaller units from getting them.
There are also actual laws and regulations dictating that multi-family homes must be built on noisy, polluting arterials. That's off-putting to a lot of people, not just the charicature of suburbanites you seem invested in dunking on.
