Sweden has been doing austerity since the mid-1990s, but its economy has grown as strongly as those of Germany and the U.S. Kinda throws a wrench into the "folk MMT" notion that government deficits are necessary for private-sector growth, eh? https://voxeu.org/content/fiscal-policy-no-free-lunch-lessons-swedish-fiscal-framework-fiscal-targeting#.XQKsYGgyFiM.twitter …pic.twitter.com/ZIZjTBLThy

"27% of taxpayer's money in Sweden goes to education and healthcare, whereas 5% goes to the police and military, and 42% to social security." Let's try it!

2/3 of the US federal budget already goes to SSDI and Medicare

Over 50% of federal discretionary spending every year goes to military spending, that doesn't include police (which Sweden lumps with military spending).

Isn’t the goal behind health care reform to spend less?

Yes, to get more..like Sweden. The point of this thread, as far as I can tell, is that the US should mimic Sweden's social spending as share of GDP.pic.twitter.com/Y1DrlgWeSB

Does this chart include state and local spending or only federal? There’s a good chance we’re already at Swedish levels of social spending. We’re just not as good at it as they are. Maybe we should address our failing social interventions before just throwing more money at them

It's federal spending (https://ourworldindata.org/government-spending …). Agree that we not only need to adjust our total spending towards more social spending, but we also need to update many of archaic systems (ex. M4A) - so we get what we pay for, much like other modern nations.

Right. So the spending isn’t the problem. The problem is that our spending doesn’t track to certain outcomes as well as other OECD countries. Probably not a budget issue
