US doesn’t define the status of Tsinghua University or Indian Institute’s of Technology or French grand ecoles. Most Americans have never even heard of those places. And yet, the people in those countrified are just as obsessed with who gets into them as we are with the Ivies

The number of US students who would like to go to Tsinghua universierty is, in round numbers, maybe 1%. The number of Chinese students who would like to go to Harvard is, in round numbers, 100%.
