I think this is a genuine thing. More and more, when I disagree with people on the left, I find they are unable to even accurately sum up my position or come close to explaining what's wrong with it. 2/ The spate of jawdroppingly bad stories on biological sex is the best/most recent example. It's just bizarre strawmen all the way down, authors totally incapable of imagining why any of this might be at all controversial -- the only model is one where opponents are deeply evil.

This lined up with my experience. The major innovation of the alt-right is the belief that the left wants to destroy America. Traditionally the right has tended to view the left as well-meaning but naive, while the left tended to view the right as fundamentally disingenuous
