2/ Information is good. The more of it we have on how Trumpworld works, the better we might be at preventing future versions. And who knows. In an alternate timeline where the media had done this from the beginning, maybe Trump isn’t president. But counterfactuals are hard
3/ In this timeline, Trump is president. And the thing his detractors just can’t seem to grok is that Trump supporters know who he is and support him because, not in spite of. The idea that there is some silver bullet that takes him down is appealing, but illusory
4/ As someone who dislikes Trump, but tends not to get foamy at the mouth about it, the thing that most irks me is that Trump’s style is all about the creation of fake drama. The trade war is on! The trade war is off! No it’s back on!
5/ That unnecessary drama is the exact opposite of what we need from government. Even beyond whether a specific policy is good or bad, the refusal to make credible commitments is one of the most destructive things a government can do. Good governance is boring and predictable
6/ But Trump seems to intuitively understand that Americans’ desire for drama has come to surpass our need for good government. We want the dopamine shot that comes from meaningless conflict, so we get unnecessary trade wars and contrived border crises and enemies of the people
7/ The thing that becomes apparent more and more each day is the extent to which MAGA world and the #Resistance are both powered by that same mechanism of needless drama.
Both are just two unsteady pillars leaning on each other for support
8/ ‘Trump is a billionaire plutocrat! No, actually trump is a business flailure and a fraud!’ This is beyond the need for just information about Trump. It’s about finding the next reason to fire up the news cycle over something that won’t matter next week
9/ I fear that this is he future for the foreseeable future, both the future of politics and he future of the media. But pendulums swing and hopefully our swings back to a more sane mode of discourse
