To understand part of what made South Park beloved, you have to know what it was like to have been atheist in the 90s and early 00s. No mainstream politician ever bothered to acknowledge your existence. Society felt like half religious people, half people playacting at religion.

Bill Maher is another person who became famous off of public atheism. I'm serious: it was really rare back then! But even back when he made "Religulous," I walked out of it thinking it was dumb and pointless. Same with "Book of Mormon." The conversation has evolved past that.

I get not liking the show, but I’m not sure how it made anything worse. The current zeitgeist is dominated by two groups who think offending the other is their duty, while holding their own concerns as sacrosanct. That’s the exact opposite of where South Park was going
