It's both amusing and tragic that terms that are overloaded in antithetical ways--'socialism', 'meritocracy'--make debate practically impossible, save between parties of extreme good faith and fastidiousness around definitions.

That's the space I usually try to have discussions in, but the anti-socialism hate makes steam come out of their ears and we can't get past that. It's so frustrating.
It’s equally frustrating when people use “capitalism” as an all-purpose container for anything bad that’s ever happened

Agreed. I prefer a balance between capitalism and socialism until we discover something that transcends them both (like a post-scarcity economy).
