It's both amusing and tragic that terms that are overloaded in antithetical ways--'socialism', 'meritocracy'--make debate practically impossible, save between parties of extreme good faith and fastidiousness around definitions.

It's not the economic system at fault then, is it? There's a lot more about a government than economic system.. How are leaders elected? How high is corruption? How involved are the citizens? How is oversight handled? What are the cultural attitudes?
Yes. Those are the conversations that we ought to be having instead of “socialism rules, capitalism drools!” or vice versa

That's the space I usually try to have discussions in, but the anti-socialism hate makes steam come out of their ears and we can't get past that. It's so frustrating.
