Starbucks in China are becoming depressing places. Brand is struggling here after massive investment. Reason? Not understanding Chinese culture, assuming the Chinese become Western as they become wealthy

What is the specific disconnect? Starbucks and similar gains seem to be doing OK in Hong Kong. But do notice that locals tend to prefer coffee shops that serve full meals. Cafe culture appears to be mostly a thing for expats and tourists
