It seems obvious to me that banning lies is incompatible with free speech because who gets to determine what are lies? On the other hand, I think we should take careful note of anyone who loudly proclaims their right to lie and ignore them

I agree. I’m just not sure that this was as much as case of someone loudly proclaiming his right to lie as someone making a normative (and factual) point against potential speech restrictions. The story is creatively edited
