Grand Budapest Hotel, very much like The Big Lebowski, is a film that takes 3 or 4 viewings to really fall in love with. I’m a little surprised that, 5 years after the release of the former, it hasn’t accumulated the same kind of cult enthusiasm/community as the latter.
My best guess: different times. The cohort of people who would have made GBH another BL now tend to find white male quirkiness passé, if not outright regressive. There is also the rise of TV
