Perhaps in part. But Obama sure got votes from a bunch of people who weren't college professors. And if you listen to Reagan talk about economics in this interview...well, he comes off pretty professor-y, only without the expertise part.
I'm not saying that you can't make objective judgements about levels of knowledge or communication styles. I'm just saying that those judgements are bound to be confounded by our own styles and preferences
You're probably right that I'm being overly naive in thinking that having demonstrable knowledge about the job one is applying for should be a significant consideration when we pick a leader.
