This just isn't true. You can "do statistics" without fully grokking the underlying math. You can be familiar w/ descriptive statistics, understand data limitations and bias, even run simple linear regressions all w/o the math. More important you can read the news skeptically

Right. Understanding the broader issues/philosophy (survivorship bias, randomness, natural experiments etc.) when dealing with data can be helpful even if one’s technical skills aren’t very developed.
