There's probably a lot of 'the media is terrible and therefore I read a variety of pro-am bloggers' (i.e. folks who are amateur journalists, but work in or adjacent to the fields about which they write)

Depends on the people. But for the most part, even ideological practitioners have a modicum of rigor that you don't find on Vox or the NYT opinion page. e.g. I know Razib Khan has an ideology but at least I know what he writes on genetics is grounded in the practice

yeah, that makes sense. i'm thinking about those "rebel reporters" who just have one pet issue, or who just offer conspiracy-tinged commentary passed off as reporting.
