Hidden benefit of growing up a steel town kid. You grow up assuming that it's perfectly natural to have some really alien morlock world as part of the backdrop of growing up. Steel plants, unlike most factories can't really hide. Their external facade is just too dramatic.

So right. And in Birmingham, AL (“the Pittsburgh of the South”) the kudzu will grow over even the old processors and smoke stacks. Now there’s an alien scene! Some of my strongest childhood memories.
