It seems to me theres subtle filibustering going on to smoke out people waiting to comment on the Missing Middle initiative tonight at Berkeley City Council. If you dip out, its 10:38pm. Thats fine. I'll be here and several others. But this deserved a full hearing.

Either that or several councilmembers who predictably were going to be skeptical of the proposal care a lot about a cannabis company not even in their district and keep harping on it knowing the upcoming item

Ending single family zoning in Berkeley isnt going to be easy if they're delaying just an item to direct city staff to *study* it.

Mayor Arreguin extends to 11 30 meaning theres still a chance folks didnt wait out here for the Missing Middle item in vain.

But yeah, 3/4ths of the Missing Middle item speakers have left already.

Ok so my councilwoman from North Berkeley is asking for more community process on an item *to study* legalizing multi families in single family zones. The Mayor is pushing to get this through despite clear attempts to run out the clock.

Then the councilwoman from the Berkeley Hills asks "how many people we want to live in Berkeley" which is irrelevant because traffic in Berkeley indicates people arent living but working here. Berkeley's population is slightly higher than it was in 1950.

To be clear. This item is to allow staff to study a proposal to let single family homes add several units everywhere. Should not be controversial, yet apparently....

Councilmember Wengraf of the Berkeley Hills is usually very pro housing but it saddens me that shes complaining about density as soon as it may affect her district for once.

We marvel at the lack of affordable housing, meanwhile almost every community that can artificially restricts the supply of housing by zoning out people who can't afford a single family house on a minimum-sized lot. Is there any other word for this but insanity?
