They pretended they were descendents of the Stuart-Sobeiski (Scots/polish royal family) line

There was a Sobieski who married a Stuart, yes. But the implication in calling them Poles is that they're from Poland. Confusing the issue further is the likelihood that they had been in Poland while fighting on the Continental side during the Napoleonic Wars. So I wonder.
