Okay, so here’s a terrifying insight to medicine in the 19th century. This is a mercury douche. Mercury was often used to treat syphilis, though not that successfully. With this nifty contraption, you could inject mercury directly into your urethra. Yay?

In the late 1790s/early 1800s, many young ladies of Europe wore their hair “a la guillotine”, like a pixie cut in honour of the victims of the reign of terror, whose hair was cut before they were beheaded. Some wore symbolic red ribbons around their necks in ghoulish tribute.

As a child, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) broke both legs & they didn’t grow anymore - though the rest of him did. He was just under 5ft & had a very large penis. He described himself as the ‘little coffee pot with the large spout’, & lovers called him the ‘prick on paws’

The regency happened at the end of the so-called Little Ice Age (1600-1850). Sometimes, when the Thames froze completely, frost fairs would be held. The last was in 1814. Here’s some pictures, including one of a piece of gingerbread purchased at the final fair.
