My take on the Hunter Biden art sale: It doesn't raise my hackles like a president maintaining an ownership interest in a hotel frequented by lobbyists and foreign dignitaries, trying to use his hotel for the G7, or hiring his own children to work in the white house.

It just looks bad and doesn't sit well with most citizens who don't like to see an elected official's son (potentially) making money because of his father. And in my opinion, the primary concern here is the lack of transparency.

And the lack of transparency is concerning. I appreciate that typically art buyers are not disclosed to the public, but this is not a typical art deal.

To all the people now yelling at me on Twitter for not calling out the Trump administration for its many (many) ethical failures. Welcome to my Twitter feed - you will see I was busy doing just that for the past 4 yearshttps://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2020/05/22/trump-latest-ethical-violation-firing-state-department-inspector-general-column/5223920002/ …

The article that Walt Shaub posted said that the artist themselves sometimes don’t even know what the bid prices are.

Hes an artist. His name half the value of his art. People want artwork done by people of known names. A Da Vinci is only a Da Vinci because people know who he is. Dont stomp an artist for using his name to sell things. And you have no idea what he intends to do with the profit.

"Appearance issues"? I remember similar noises when Ella Emhoff got a modeling contract. Are the relatives of government officials not allowed to just, like...live their lives? They didn't choose their parents, or their parents' jobs

Who are these “people“? By “people“, do you mean you? I think you mean you. And yes actually, it is a little surprising. You’re going at this private citizen’s personal art sale like it’s equivalent to being appointed as a senior advisor, and it’s just not.

artwork commands the price that a willing buyer is offering. It's the purest form of free-market capitalism around. People buy art for lots of reasons. Imputing motive other than that the buyer likes the art or thinks it will appreciate in value is on you, not the artist or buyer

This is silly. There's never been one day of Hunter's adult life when he could have avoided the association with his well-known Dad. So that means he should have set aside all of his own aspirations? Totally unreasonable. The market will determine whether the price is reasonable.
