This is a fascinating article, bit it conflates the progeny of Cain and Ham in a way that, while common in American protestantism, does not reflect the Catholic teachings that Tolkien would be familiar with. It just doesn't follow that he conceived of Grendel as black.

Tolkien also argued that sigelwara (sigelhearwan) was in use before Anglo Saxons had knowledge of Latin, let alone Ethiopians and must have had an earlier referent (possibly a northern monster); and that it referred to the "sons of Múspell [a norse fire giant] than of Ham" ...
