Really appreciate this breakdown, but it only briefly touches on the human labour that goes into each paper. Does the ACM have any data on the amount of free labour that it is receiving from the academic community?

I don't know of any accounting of free labour, but it is definitely substantial. arXiv annual reporting makes some estimates of this, perhaps SIGCHI should follow suit?

Thanks Julie this is great. There is also a larger issue with how environmentally sustainable all of these conferences are (flying thousands of people around the world) and perhaps now is a good time to think about how we (as a community) are going to address this in the future.
