    And apparently it’s ! A perfect day to appreciate how amazing wetlands are. Most were drained over the past 200yr, government grants available for many years. Now their contribution to a diverse habitat is better recognised, many wetlands are being reinstated

    Fallen trees slowing water down, creating different habitats under the surface, throwing shade on water in summer, sheltering though winter. Bridges for wildlife to cross, a home to more species than when they were standing. There is so much to see everywhere. Life in winter 😊

    We bought the farm next door 2yrs ago, this Moss was part of it. After the auction, a local chap came to us and said, “get that auld bog drained lad.” Glad we didn’t! It’s one of the most diverse areas on the new land. A great carbon store, habitat and sponge for flood water.

    Catkins on the newly laid hedge, one of the first signs of the new season approaching. Catkins are male flowers. The female flowers are a small bud with red bits sticking out. Wind blows the pollen onto the bud. If they get pollinated, they’ll be the hazel nuts in autumn.

    Starbud 52nd Ex93 4e One of our best cows & one of my absolute favourites too. Calved a beautiful heifer calf, the spit of her and back incalf (served 50 d calved) to sexed semen Bushmills Jazz. 10,000kg milk this time 8 lactations, never lifted a foot We love you Starbud!

    Wintertime is relentless. We haven’t had much frost or snow, but it still wears. Every morning, every afternoon, the cows are to milk, muck out & feed. Calves & all replacement heifers need feed & bedding too. 13 hr days 7 day/wk And it’s still the only job I’d ever want to do.

    This is the door bolt for our New Building. Well we call it the New Building, but it’s actually 50 yrs old & it was 2nd hand then... Anyway, there’s a colony of pipistrelle bats that use the hole to roost, even though we use it every day. Nature finds a way 🦇 Isn’t that cool 😊

    Sorting school visits for year ending Mar 31st, we are fully booked. For 2020/21 we only have 5 spaces left! Thanks to the wonderful schools who want to come and learn about farming, food production and the environment from an actual farm, and not via google or pressure groups!
