I'm genuinely concerned that so many residents are worried about burnout. Is this a shift in culture? When I was a resident we were just too busy learning medicine and too worried trying to not look incompetent during AM report. We didn't have time to worry about burnout.

That's what you concluded? SMH. The working hours are already humane. In the real world you will likely put in same amount of hours. Again, burnout as an intern? Lol.

Not sure where you're concluding this from. You seem like someone who works out. I'm sure you've noticed progression in your ability as you train more intensely. Residency is no different. Your first week you may have mental fatigue at hr 8 but that should change by month 3.

I can't help but observe that it is more than eight months into the academic year. She has therefore finished over two-thirds of her internship. So I'm not sure what your point is here about the difference between starting out and three months.

The other issue is that beyond the hours internship is an experiment in learned helplessness. Every week a new boss, every month a new service, every day a problem that probably can’t be fixed. Constant changes in rules/stress. Animals treated like that get so stressed they die.

We have more advanced coping mechanisms, and one of those is reaching out to others to make sure one’s experience isn’t unique, you’re not alone, things will be OK. So we’d thank you for not shitting on the interns when they do that.

Luckily, I don't think most interns are in this boat. We are just rewarding shitty behavior in this case. Just my humble opinion though.

You may need to look beyond your own backyard here. Burnout among residents/interns is one of the largest growing concerns in the medical field (along with increasing physician suicide rates). Just because you don't personally experience the problem doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
