I've had some time to think about the @MTG_Arena Historic format announcement and want to be honest about how I feel, because I love Magic and want to give it the best chance to grow.
That being said, there are factors here working against Historic's success.
Thread incoming.
1a. The decision to not support Historic with ladder play is akin to telling players that they shouldn't worry about standard rotation, because they can always play with those cards at home. The difference in ladder v none is the difference between FNM and kitchen table.
1b. If the format isn't supported officially by some sort of system to encourage advancement, players have no reason to play NOR spend their wildcards on it. That seems backwards for business. It might as well not exist or have a name (which I like, BTW.)
2a. Folks may say "they can always turn this into a ladder-able format later!" Sure, but the farther and farther you get away from the inception, the higher the bar will be for new players to clear to get in. That bar is lowered if you just start now.
2b. You also might say because it's not a competitively supported format they're not worried about entry into it- WotC would be foolish to not do so if it turns out great. Then we go back to point 2a. Not saying you have to support with events, but ladder play is crucial.
3a. The statement on Thursday stated that Standard was healthy. It might be, but healthy doesn't always equal fun. Since the goal for Historic is PURELY casual, fun should take a huge precedence over healthy. Which leads to...
4a. I get the decision to not allow KLD and (less egregious) AKH blocks back in, IF you were worried about competitive play and banned cards hurting your new format. But again, there is no reason for anyone to play it competitively, so I have no idea why this matters one bit.
4b. I would argue that both KLD and AKH block have more "fun" cards that the last year of Standard, but there is some brokeness along the way. Again- who are you worried about hurting? The combo of no new blocks and no ladder is hedging, and losing on both sides.
Last one! 5a. This one is pretty simple- WotC is leaving money on the table out of fear for hurting their new format. The cards exist, and are programmed. This is just extra income/WC usage at almost no cost. Business wise, I just don't get it.
It's still June. Historic doesn't exist until October. There is still time to fix this! While I'd love for all of those points to be addressed, I'd be content for a couple that aligned together. This format could have potential, but as is it'll be DOA.
