    Abashiri is a popular destination in the winter when tourists come to see the drift ice on the Sea of Okhotsk. February is the best time to see the drift ice. The Limited Express Okhotsk connects Sapporo to Asahikawa and Abashiri.

    This new Yamanote Line ticket gate will debut at Takanawa Gateway and Shinjuku stations in a limited roll-out. There's a QR code scanner, and the IC card reader is positioned off to the side.

    This is Japan’s largest tunnel boring machine. It will begin work on a Shinkansen route between Shinagawa and Nagoya that will open in 2027 (it tunnels 20 m / 66 ft per day)

    JR Hokkaido have introduced two new sightseeing trains called the “Sanshi-Suimei” series on local lines. The trains are renovated Kiha 40 series trains, which have been thoroughly refurbished both inside and out.

    The 185 series Odoriko has run between Tokyo and Shimoda since 1981. The 251 series was added in 1990. Both will be replaced in March by the new Saphir Odoriko.

    As the year draws to a close let’s take a look at some of Japan’s outstanding train designs in 2019. This year's design award winners are: the Sotetsu 12000 series, and Hiroshima Electric Railway’s “Green Mover Apex”, and Seibu’s Laview express.

    The new Shibuya Station on the Ginza Line will open on January 3rd 2020. Work to relocate the station building has been ongoing since 2009 and is just one part of major redevelopment projects in and around the Shibuya Station complex.

    To celebrate the opening of a new museum in Arashiyama, Kyoto, the Keifuku Randen Line is currently running a special “Museum Train” which is decorated both inside and out with images from some of Japan’s most famous paintings.

    JR East today confirmed the old Harajuku Station building will be torn down. Since the 2016 announcement, there had been talk of trying to preserve it alongside the new structure, or at another location.

    The Ikebus is due to go into service a later this month, serving short routes around Ikebukuro Station. It has a vivid interior, which could be a challenge if you are nursing a hangover.
