The Trump administration's stated military objective of "securing the oil" in Syria is in part keep that oil out of Russia and Assad's hands, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper suggested in October.

What's interesting is that we never got into Syria to bog down the Russians but instead to fight ISIS.

That’s the new US policy? If that was the case, prior to the US withdrawal there weren’t Russians in eastern Syria, Jeffrey’s support for Ankara resulted in Russia winning. In fact US decision to end support for southern rebels did the same. How is that “quagmire”

It’s the same policy they’ve had for a while now. I believe it was January 2018 when David Satterfield told Congress the US military was going to stay in Syria and combo of sanctions & allies withholding aid would make Russia and Iran’s support for Assad too costly.
