Asked why the American public should tolerate US involvement in Syria, Special Envoy James Jeffrey points out the small US footprint in the fight against ISIS. "This isn't Afghanistan. This isn't Vietnam. This isn't a quagmire. My job is to make it a quagmire for the Russians."

Ambassador Jeffrey is both the special envoy to the defeat-ISIS coalition and the State Department's lead man on diplomacy regarding Syria policy. His comment about making Syria a "quagmire for the Russians" refers to diplomatic efforts... mostly.

The Trump administration's stated military objective of "securing the oil" in Syria is in part keep that oil out of Russia and Assad's hands, US Defense Secretary Mark Esper suggested in October.

Though Russia has been successful militarily in Syria, Jeffrey said, "they don't have a political way out of their problems with Assad. Our job is to present them through the UN... with a way forward."

What's interesting is that we never got into Syria to bog down the Russians but instead to fight ISIS.

What’s also interesting is the Russians went to Syria not to fight ISIS but to prop up Assad against Syrian rebels.

That’s the new US policy? If that was the case, prior to the US withdrawal there weren’t Russians in eastern Syria, Jeffrey’s support for Ankara resulted in Russia winning. In fact US decision to end support for southern rebels did the same. How is that “quagmire”

It’s the same policy they’ve had for a while now. I believe it was January 2018 when David Satterfield told Congress the US military was going to stay in Syria and combo of sanctions & allies withholding aid would make Russia and Iran’s support for Assad too costly.
