I am using two 6x2mm per base myself but they are slightly lower strength. I definitely pick them up by the base though and not the model.
50mm round MDF plus rare earth magnets works a charm. 14 @PlayJudgement models fit comfortably.

Yeah definitely by the base! Another advantage of the MDF base is that it gives you something decent to pick them up with.
