Happy Monax Day! In 1786 Madison examined a groundhog, which he called by the species name, monax. He concluded it was a marmot, but was not sure if it hibernated. Clearly Madison didn't look for the monax to see its shadow on ! Image: Stefaab Van der Biest, Pixabay

It’s ! We doubt that the First Lady ate it for breakfast, but she served it often enough at the White House that Dolley Madison’s name and ice cream are forever frozen together.

British King George III died 200 years ago . A political cartoonist in 1813 depicted George III and Madison boxing (US naval forces had just captured the British ship Boxer). Madison made no comment about the king’s death in his 1820 letters. Library of Congress

Celebrate the upcoming Groundhog Day on 2/1 with a walking tour exploring the science behind the groundhog's shadow. Learn how the cyclical changes in nature, called phenology, helped Mr. Madison determine when to plant and when to harvest.

James Madison’s stepson John Payne Todd died in 1852 at age 59. During his final illness, Todd told his cousin, “I have never willfully injured anyone — but myself — I have been my own worst enemy.” Montpelier Foundation photo of Todd’s signature on his 1814 French visa.
