Not as dumb as people think it is. It's a knee-jerk reaction to think it's worse security than the security standard of hashed+salted passwords in view of how prevalent password reuse is.

It's insanely dumb and I strongly disagree with you. Offline cracking for a well chosen password hashing function can take a long ass time, meaning unless it's a targeted attack 99% of your users are likely safe for a long time, more than enough to change their passwords.
