First major fail on commenting on MOS: Me: "Doc ID XYZ is ambiguous and needs clarification about ..., does it mean P or Q; can you do X after applying the suggested workaround." Response: "You do the research, tell us what you find, and we might update the note".

Here's an interesting little detail about "inlist iterators" and an undocumented (but potentially necessary) hint from a "real-world" problem a couple of years ago:

It's taken me over a month to get fit enough after a 9 month layoff, but I've finally managed to do a continuous 10Km on the erg, and just clipped in under 45 minutes. Target for the end of the year: 42 minutes. Over-optimistic target: 41 minutes

2/2 Obviously you can run into parsing problems if you do the wrong kinds of query and have an unsuitable partitioning strategy but I'm not counting that. The question is simply about whether you could load the dictionary cache with more metadata than it can handle.

1/2 An interesting question appeared in the comments of an old post about the 2^20-1 limit on segments to a partitioned object: Has anyone seen a system where the pure volume of segment information from partitioned tables has produced a performance issue.

Just got my "before you go" email from Oracle Openworld Europe next week at Excel: See you there, (if you can tear yourself away from the cat).

Have you got some Oracle technical knowledge or story you think others would like to hear? We're looking for great presentations for the Midlands Tech Summit in Birmingham on 29th April

Workshop 2020 ( ) is only 7 weeks away, and I've just updated my "Public Appearances" page with the abstract for my session on Execution Plans:

If you think maxqueryid from v$undostat will help you identify what's causing a problem with undo, you need to think again:

Here's a golden oldie that can be adapted to find (recent) execution plans for all sorts of conditions:

You use referential integrity constraints in a relational database? What a noob! 😉 On a serious note, I guess a lot depends on how they are being used. If you are using them in an early phase of an ETL process, I guess you are far less likely to see this.

Nice to hear that Oracle PMs et. al. are talking about 20c - just as I find my first 19c bug fixed in 21.1 !

“If you write that is technically incorrect it’s not Oracle’s fault if sometimes the SQL completes without an error" - He shows how queries with "obviously wrong" to_number ( 'X' ) can still return no rows instead of an exception

Oh, I also changed the url from to just so update your bookmarks! (the old URL will still work too, but will do a HTTP 301 redirect to the new one)

On the downside, the vinegar seems to have dissolved the glue that stuck the contact plate to the battery cover - so it was a bad idea to drop the cover while changing the batteries. Next step - a very small drop of super glue.

Success. All the white gunk gone, some pitting on the pair of electrodes that were really badly gunked up, no signs of damage on the other pair. Camera now working again (after addition of new batteries).

Kitchen Science: A couple of A4 batteries were left (passive voice - weasel writing) in my camera a couple of years ago, so massive corrosion on contacts, camera non functioning. Relevant bit now sitting in little bowl of (white wine) vinegar fizzing away - looks promising.

I love - I had a single bed with mattress to dispose of: posted it to freecycle and it was gone in 2 hours (to someone who really needed it).
