    I trained a computer to read all the op-eds & these are its policy recommendations: 1. Get out. NOW. Withdraw all the troops. 2. Except the CT ones. Keep those. 3. For as long as conditions require. But not more than 6 months. 1/2

    This is a good example of what is often wrong in Washington. Let diplomats do their job and provide their own assessment based on negotiations and engagement with all parties. Empower diplomats!

    In my experience, U.S. intel agencies consider the intercepted internal discussions of adversaries who have been offered nothing as dispositive of what they might accept in a negotiation where they are offered something.

    Unless “US intel agencies” are now negotiating with the Taliban and regional powers and actually have probed the possibility of an extension to withdrawal timing, I don’t believe they’re in a position to assess this. *Diplomats* need to probe and assess this.

    “Nothing happened” 😳

    In 1979, when the Red Army invaded Afghanstan, they had predicted, they would quell the Afg.Mujadeen in 3 months but it lingered on for 10 years.Nothing happened. Ultimately, they had to leave the country but then USSR was on the verge of collapse. Great lesson for invaders!
