The advice I continue giving folks looking into PhD programs is to look for an advisor who is kind. Don’t look for the “most brilliant” advisor. Look for the person who is kind, who mentors you, lifts you up. And pro-tip: kind folks are usually the most brilliant.

I have found the shift from retributive to restorative thinking absolutely and completely transformative in my own life. An enormous paradigm shift.

My husband uses this for his 6th graders after I found it on here. I wish I could remember the source. Maybe after coffee. It is really helpful for him & for his students in terms of determining underlying causes of behavioral problems & repairing damage done in a meaningful way.

Is it truly justice if we just cut people off to keep producing? Is that how we get free? It’s easier. But is it more life giving? Does it help communities flourish? I don’t know...

Recently a teacher who uses restorative practices remarked that it’s much easier to be punitive, it helps with production to quickly cut someone off, but it doesn’t change people. Maybe punitive measures are just in service of capital: cut them off, keep producing.

Of course there need to be consequences when someone breaches a norm or causes harm to another person. But are punitive measures the only way? How do these create a binary we then performatively uphold: good people versus “bad” people?

But what does this accomplish? Honestly? What does putting someone in prison accomplish? What does charging someone a fine accomplish? What does suspending a student and never helping them understand how their actions affected another accomplish?

In so many systems in our society we are taught to think that the only way to respond to an infraction of an agreed upon or hegemonically imposed infraction is by taking something away, isolating the person who did the infraction, taking away their rights.

I was shocked that *my* first reaction was asking whether this student was suspended—whether the consequences were punitive, immediately isolating the student and taking away their rights including their right learn. But this is how we’ve been taught to think of consequences.

As they described the consequences it was centered around the student understanding how their infraction caused a rupture in the community. Different methods were an employed which teachers who use these practices can better describe but these were meant to restore community.

Many teachers I know use restorative justice practices. Recently a teacher told me about a situation with a student and my immediate response was “is the student suspended?” They responded, “there are consequences, but the student doesn’t lose the right to an education.”

So many systems that govern our lives are punitive: school suspensions, traffic violations, prisons. Little space is offered for addressing ruptures in community and attempting to repair them. And we then reproduce those punitive performances with one another.

I am blessed to be in a beautiful situation where my advisor is willing to work with me towards a completion timeline that is *economically responsible.* Many advisors care more about margins than having critical conversations about markets.

Do students have anxieties? Absolutely. Do we often feel the need to strain a detail to its utmost limits? Without question. But these realities do not occur within a vacuum. Everyone knows the horror stories. Folks know the students who are being hazed. Why gaslight students?

Every year a grad student is still dissertating is another year they miss out on the possibility of earning a living wage. The vast majority of grad students I know aren’t concerned with writing a ✌🏾magnum opus.✌🏾They care about credit debt, loan debt, & a precarious job market.
