On behalf of myself and our family, I want to express our deepest gratitude for the outpouring of support, love, and sympathy from around the world. Here is a message from our family and the latest update surrounding our beloved Grant:

3b/ Wandering into oncoming traffic, or into dangerous neighborhoods or situations, being assaulted, having their medical needs completely neglected, etc. etc. etc. Most families who have loved ones w serious mental illness worry more abt loved one's safety than their own.

3/The second point is that violence and serious mental illness comes in two forms, not one. People love to debate how much more or less violent folks with schizophrenia (or bipolar mania) actually are. But what about the violence they are subjected to or at risk of on the street?

2/ Involuntary Outpatient Commitment takes many different forms in different states and communities. In NJ where my parents live it has been a crucial tool for bringing my father home from short term care after a manic episode - keeping him safe and nudging him toward stability.

I walked out because I want the Times, in its treatment of its own employees, to live up to the principles that we regularly propound in our editorials.

Today we were ready to work for as long as it took to reach a fair deal, but management walked away from the table with five hours to go. It’s official: @NYTimesGuild members are walking out for 24 hours on Thursday. We know what we’re worth.

Thank you Lulu!

Of many dumb things tweeted by him this might be the most self-serving. Workers have the right to strike to demand better conditions. I support a fair contract for NYT guild (and all workers) and believe in unions to help achieve that. twitter.com/elonmusk/statu…

I am joining more than 1,100 of my colleagues at the NYT on strike tomorrow. Among national, business, and metro reporters, more than 90% of the desk is joining the strike. None of us wanted it to come to this, but two years is too long to wait for a fair contract.

Word. I love my job so much and I love my colleagues, too. But I’m so disappointed and disheartened by the iniquity (and inequity) on display.

This is a sad day for @nytimes. This company pledged $150 million in stock buybacks this year, but it’s offering staff what amounts to a pay cut, during record inflation in the most expensive city in the world. I love the Times and wish it loved me back.

This makes me so sad.

The Wapo is killing its Sunday Magazine, which was my home for 20 years. It carried some great journalism over the years, winning 2 Pulitzers. All staffers --talents all -- were just ... fired. The termination notice was as cold as the surface of Uranus. washingtonpost.com/media/2022/11/

2a/ Again, without their consent. This was at a time when they were being forced to secure consent in the U.S., So they were deliberately going south of border where they could do these particular experiments with impunity.

2/ In Guatemala, the US Govt went a full step further from what they did in Tuskegee - not only withholding treatment / cure, but also deliberately infecting: prisoners, sex-workers, asylum residents, orphans, soldiers, etc - to study penicillin prophylactic potential.

1/ It was not exactly a "sacrifice" so much as experimentation / abuse / gross violation of basic human and civil rights, to which they did not consent.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the end of the Tuskegee syphilis study. Tomorrow, I will be joined by colleagues & #PublicHealth leaders as we honor the 623 African American men, their suffering & sacrifice, and our commitment to ethical research and practice. twitter.com/CDCgov/status/…
