I wonder why alt-med folks think "covering up symptoms" is a bad idea? I see patients with severe pain/stiffness and urinary incontinence. Is it somehow wrong to try to make people feel better?

I think it Maybe depends on context. I have to shift through a lot of alt med stuff when looking for PCOS treatments and in that case BC is used to cover a lot of the symptoms but the underlying insulin resistance and metabolic disorder remains in treated and is left to get worse

So in that and similar veins the argument is you aren’t treating the cause of the disease just the symptoms and that can sometimes lead to worse health.

It kind of seems like there's a lot of fertilization of suffering. You see it in the romanticization of contracting measles, which is depicted as a "benign, happy childhood illness" out which one can acquire that coveted "natural immunity." Never mind we'll lose 1/1000 to death.

I can speak to this. In the old homeopathy tradition, symptom suppression was a huge sin. They believed that this led to a deeper pathology. Like so many other alt med platitudes, it is used selectively, and more as an insult against others than a roadmap.

Except for the inconvenient fact that they base their entire "treatment" on like cures like, literally TREATING THE SYMPTOMS! The homeopathic remedy for menstrual cramps is also the treatment for rheumatoid arthritis because of the symptoms 🙄

if hypertension is the consequence of some dysfunction in how blood vessels contract that we cannot yet correct then yes FFS give me symptom suppression. Because otherwise people die. etc, etc.

I think they are trying to say that you shouldn't just COVER the symptoms. You should be able to CURE them. Which logically leads to, "conventional medicine is unworthy, only COVERING symptoms. Worship at the altar of alt-med & Ye shall be saved!" Oops. I meant, "cured". 😉🙄
