Kotkaniemi isn't a $6.1M player yet by any measure. But the Habs are relying very much on him to be their 2nd line centre this season and he is not expendable for them after losing Danault. That $6.1M cap hit would stink now, but the qualifying offer next season is worse.

All in all a fun gambit for the Hurricanes to take and we should enjoy it now because it pretty much confirms we'll never see another offer sheet ever again lol

(of course, if Montréal doesn't match trading a 1st and a 3rd for a $6.1M kotkaniemi could be considered a backfire, but i have no read on what his value is as an asset)

montreal wont match it

They can’t rn. You can only be 10% over the cap during the off-season. Currently (CapFriendly) they have 83.7 spent matching would put them at 89.8 Max they can be 89.32. So they need to do some roster management to keep him Compensation is a 1st and 3rd if they don’t

I don’t hate it for the Canes tbh. Take the cap hit this year and hope that he reaches his potential. Only going to give up a late 1st and 3rd. Definitely worth the risk

His QO is 6.1. Either they pay that again next year or they let him walk to free agency

And Carolina might not make the playoffs next year with their downgrades honestly. Tough decision
