    My impression is that faculty generally aren’t aware of these trends - or, rather, they see it in the classroom but can’t name it. I strongly recommend suicide prevention training for all faculty. At OSU, contact - I learned a lot from their workshop.

    Vector calculus students are often confused about whether vectors have a basepoint in addition to a magnitude and direction. This problem can be fixed this by including all of differential geometry, differential topology, and abstract linear algebra in the course.

    I’m not sure because, there are clear cases of biases. In one study the instructors returned HW at the same time. The man was rated by students as returning HW ontime, while the woman was criticized for returning HW late.

    We need leadership from groups like to set explicit professional standards against this. At the very least we need statements and guidelines to which white allies can point to help with the work of changing these practices in their departments NOW.

    Everyone in academia, especially white executive admins, should read this essay by my UNH colleague . I feel this so hard. And we rarely hear in these academic pubs from folks openly calling themselves Chicanx — notable for that too.

    On , reminder that earliest evidence for understanding the fixed ratio of circumference and diameter comes, as we'd expect, out of Africa. The Egyptians fixed it at 3.1605 (according to the so-called "Rhind" Papyrus). Pythagoras studied in Egypt & Archimedes built on him.
