This is the personal memoir I wrote some time ago about living in Japan as a young researcher. "Glimpse into the life of a professor of logic as he fumbles his way through Japan."

Thanks to an email from a reader, I found a compass and straightedge "angle trisection" online. Spoiler alert: it doesn't. But, I was amazed by how close it was to an actual trisection. The person's construction was pretty complicated, but I distilled it

In which I object to philosophers looking down at the sort of science done by the vast majority of professional scientists: (lunchtime repost)

This is a recently discovered illusion, and it’s really quite striking. The strange effect is called the ‘curvature blindness’ illusion

If you'll indulge me, a thread. We were out for a walk yesterday and we came to a railway bridge (1/n)

Can anyone answer: How many such tilings are there? Absurd, but is it unique?

One sometimes sees the argument as a proof by induction that there is such a tiling. The further observation I like to point out is that the inductive proof provides a specific tiling construction method.

Tiling a 16x16 board, with one unit removed, using L shaped tiles. Recursively divide into four smaller boards, place the tile on those not containing the omitted square. This reduces to four smaller instances of the problem. Works with any square board of size 2^n.

What is your reaction to: The irrationals are exactly those reals that are a different distance from every rational number.

I asked a question on MathOverflow concerning the possibility of bi-interpretation synonymy for H_ω1 and H_ω2, a question that arises in my new paper with Alfredo Roque Freire on bi-interpretation in weak set theories.
