Trump defended his response to the violence in Charlottesville in 2017 when he said there were “very fine people on both sides.” He said the was talking about people who “felt very strongly about the monument to Robert E. Lee. A great general, whether you like it or not.”pic.twitter.com/fulPWpY4zC

The federal government was created as an agent of the states. Not the other way around. As such, he understandably felt his duty was to his STATE instead of agents of his state.

An agent of the states? That's not correct at all.

Lee was not a traitor to his country. The south declared secession from the US. He was a great general for the Republic he fought for.
-
There was so such country at the Confederate States of America. It never existed.

Look, a dipshit who probably never graduated from high school who thinks they know "the real history they don't teach in school".

I know it is not politically correct nowadays but Lee was fighting for Virginia. Many of these men are quite conflicted, they had no great love of slavery but saw the North as an aggressor. I loathe Trump but facts are facts.
-
Facts are indeed facts. Lee fought for his country until his country invaded his state. Secession by VA was legal and Lee decided to defend his sovereign state from the tyranny of Lincoln.
-
There was no legal mechanism for states to secede. How dare Lincoln tyrannize the south by telling them they can't have leave the Union because they were prevented from expanding slavery. But since you're making up shit, you probably thing the war was about protective tariffs.
-
Again, you know nothing of what you speak. There was nothing on the Constitution to prevent a state from leaving. How did the first states become a part of the US - by way of ratification of the Constitution by way of a local vote. Vote to join, vote to secede. Lincoln invaded.
-
Again, I am an outsider. I am originally from France, we have had our share of civil wars so has any European country. We do not see the other side as an enemy. The Civil War is over 150 years ago! Get over it. They are back in the union. The war is over.

Not if you are a triggered monument hater nor a Trump hater.

Rommel was fighting for Nazism?
-
True. He admired Hitler for making Germany strong again, used Jewish slave labor in North Africa, yet never joined the Nazi Party, disobeyed direct orders from Hitler & eventually turned against him. He was forced to commit suicide due to role in plot to kill Hitler.pic.twitter.com/yIj0MajLFG
-
yup. i read somewhere where he was quoted as hoping hitler got killed, and that he ONLY fought to protect germany..not that it makes him any better, but it was true for a lot of ppl we fought against, and for. always context to these things
-
Yes apologies, it was my mistake. Thank you for correcting mepic.twitter.com/VzsvIQvU0n

Historians now agree that Rommel didn't have a role in the plot. His widow provided 1,950 notes from Rommel: Rommel sympath. with resist., but didn't take an active role. Hist. Reuth concl. plot group didn't win Rommel's supp., Fraser+Reuth concl. that he didn't know plot plans.
-
In 2010, Germ. historian Neitzel supported Maurice Remy's theory, that von Hofacker, the officer in charge of the sub-plot in Paris (to arrest all SS, NSDAP + Gestapo pers. in Paris), who visited Rommel b4 the plot was carried out, may have informed Rommel. Still, no active role.
-
He probably knew about it, but was too sick (& injured when his car was hit by shell). Apparently he still insisted he loved Hitler even as he "chose" suicide, mainly to spare his family & reputation from a messy trial. So yeah, not a Resistance hero.
-
Von Hofacker was sent to Rommel in early July, before he was wounded (July 17). The assass. attempt + "Valkyrie were carried out on July 20. In April, the Plot group had already placed Lt. Gen. Speidel as Rommel's chief of staff. His job: to check Rommel's att. + win him over.
