What is also cool is that this discovery looks to have been facilitated by metagenomics — I don't see, on a first quick look, any reporting of culturing. Just (1) the microbiota is enriched for taxa and genes involved in N fixation and (2) stable isotopes analysis showing uptake.

That's insane looking! I'll never forget someone finding some weird round blob things in the water by boat dock at camp. The counselors didn't want to go near it, the kids were traumatized. I still wish I could go back in time & find out what that was.
