Robotic surgery apparently thriving…but is there evidence that the cost is worth it? Where is the evidence that it improves outcomes and/or efficiency. Is it just more fun?pic.twitter.com/ekdPFeOpSI

I don’t use robot myself. Adds time/cost for limited potential benefit (wound infection, hernia). Ergonomics superior to traditional MIS. Patient/public perception is evolving. Younger surgeons increasingly adopting in response to market forces and sense that it is “the future”.

Agree, Jeff, but not everything new is better. Glitzy, good marketing, but increased costs, increased OR time, potential complications more extreme compared to open operation (e.g., inguinal hernia), and no good data.

Our surgeons with robotic expertise, including a partner who does pancreatic surgery, are outstanding. For experienced surgeons/institution, it's safe as open, but no better. The imperfect data supports that. But I personally won't go through a learning curve for my own patients.
