From what I understand is that some of these orgs sell the papers to make a profit but recoup costs and possibly fund future research? Isn’t that the counter argument? Or am I wrong?

ACM does use the surplus money for other good things, such as helping students attend conferences. I support those things, but I think that a closed-access publication model--or high open access fees--are an inappropriate way to fund them.

People will always use search engines, too. But a fully Open Access DL would be used more, and would provide more value to the community!
