These companies are fundamentally changing the way humans interact with each other and the world. They’re butchering privacy. And they do. Not. Care. As long as they are making money, nothing else matters to them.

Pleas around ethics make no difference. Again - they don’t care. Eroding privacy, permanently warping society, exposing vulnerable people to harassment or worse - none of it matters when compared to making money.

We have to actually pass laws making this illegal, saying clearly “this is too far.” I don’t want to hear about self-regulation or focus groups or discussion. We’re done discussing. This is wrong. Make it stop.

Tech companies with these practices do not respond to fines or shame or hearings. None of that matters when the money is still pouring in. Our only option is making this illegal. They’re not going to stop for anything less.

(I know this is extreme and it’s morning and I’m grouchy, but, man. I’m so tired. Stop telling me we’ll talk about, we’ll hear from them at a conference, hold a hearing, accept opinion papers, etc. They’re not changing. Stop them.)

Alright, sorry, it's been a day and I'm still furious and I have a couple quick things to add. Allowing strangers to identify you and pull up information about you ON SIGHT is a stalking/harassment NIGHTMARE.

Someone finds you attractive when passing you on the street? Cool, they now know where you work and live. Someone doesn't like your look, thinks you look odd/like you don't belong here/like you need a "lesson"? Again, THEY NOW KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE AND WORK.

Imagine the nightmare for trans people who are ALREADY frequent victims of violence and harassment. What about immigrant/refugee populations? We all know it doesn't take anything you do to set a bad/ill person off. This just gives them tools to be awful more effectively.

I genuinely cannot imagine that even a very informal risk assessment or ethics review when developing this product would miss a danger this huge and obvious. Again, this may disproportionately endanger already-vulnerable groups, but it is a huge risk for EVERYONE.

I find two scenarios more likely: 1) they never did any ethical/risk assessment at all, or 2) they saw the risk and decided their bottom line was more important than people's safety. Either way, this is horrifying. An ethical company would pull back after this is pointed out.
