    To be effective, these security guarantees by the US and others are akin to the guarantees that come with NATO membership? Why would this be acceptable to Russia? Or to the US for that matter?

    Ukraine & Russia are making progress on a potential peace deal that could see big foreign powers promise to protect Kyiv in the future. There’s just one catch: no-one has let those foreign powers know & I explain

    Anyone doubting 's point should look at official EU reaction to refugee situation. In 2015/16, 1.5 million Syria/Afghan refugees was crisis: catastrophic/ existential threat to EU. Now 3million+ mostly white, Christian refugees from Ukraine & EU says it's manageable 1/

    Way too early to talk about diplomatic breakthrough. Many sticking points exist, including how neutrality would be guaranteed. If US and others need to provide binding security guarantees to defend Ukraine if it’s attacked again, that’s akin to NATO Art 5

    New: US & NATO allies are sending several surface-to-air missiles systems to Ukraine. A senior US official tells me these systems include Soviet-era SA-8, SA-10, SA-12 and SA-14 mobile air defense systems, w/range higher than Stingers, giving capability to hit cruise missiles.
