At that point I think it's unambiguously fair to stop playing along with calling it fare protection. It has nothing to do with protecting fares.
Last time this happened to me and I went to the station booth, they told me to walk to the next station @MTA
This was the next station I walked to cause the first one didn’t have machines that worked either 
Just so happens that those two stations (in The Bronx) happen to be HEAVILY policed. Don’t think that’s a coincidence.
